Cloaker for MAC

Free, open-source file encryption for Mac: drop a file on the window, set a password and choose where to save it. No installation needed.

Cloaker Overview

Cloaker protects a file with a password in as few steps as possible. Drop a file onto the window, set a password and choose where to save the encrypted copy. To decrypt, drop the encrypted file on the window, enter the password and choose the output location. There is nothing to install on the Mac, because Cloaker comes as a single app bundle. Be careful with your password: if you lose or forget it, your data cannot be recovered, so keep it in a password manager or another secure backup.

Cloaker uses libsodium's file format, with XChaCha20-Poly1305 for the data and a key derived with Argon2id. Version 5.0 replaces the old Qt interface with a new one and libsodium with pure Rust code, while the file format stays the same: Cloaker 4 and 5 read each other's files, files from versions 1 to 3 still decrypt, and the web version at cloaker.mobi remains compatible. Cloaker also runs on Windows and Linux, and a separate command-line download for the Mac is available on the same page.

Cloaker is made by Theron Spiegl and is free and open source under the GPL-3.0 license. It is a universal app for Apple Silicon and Intel. The project does not state a minimum macOS version. Its release process has no Apple notarization step, so macOS may warn you when you first open the app.

Key Features

Cloaker keeps file encryption down to a drag and a password.

  • Drag and drop: drop a file on the window to start.
  • Password based: no keys or accounts to manage.
  • No installation: one app bundle on the Mac.
  • Modern encryption: XChaCha20-Poly1305 with Argon2id.
  • Compatible files: reads files from earlier Cloaker versions.
  • Cross-platform: Mac, Windows and Linux versions.
  • Web version: cloaker.mobi works with the same files.
  • Command-line tool: a separate Mac download for scripts.

What’s New in Version 5.0.0

Cloaker 5.0 rebuilds the app in pure Rust and keeps the file format unchanged.

  • The Qt interface is replaced by a new egui app.
  • libsodium and the C++/Rust layer are replaced by pure Rust.
  • The command-line tool gets a round of correctness fixes.
  • Cloaker 4 and 5 read each other's files, and files from versions 1 to 3 still decrypt.
